Turn on your whistle phone finder

Open ClapWhistle and allow microphone access. Go to Tune → Signal and choose whistle mode. Choose both if you’d like the option to clap too. Return to the Finder screen and turn the finder on before you put your phone down.

The listening status tells you when the finder is running. Keep an eye on that status during setup: granting a permission by itself does not turn listening on.

In Tune → Alert, pick the sound you want to hear, set the volume and try it. Vibration and flashlight give you more ways to notice a nearby phone. Sound behaviour can change with Do Not Disturb, alarm volume and connected Bluetooth devices, so check your usual setup.

Use one steady note

Start with your phone on a table near you. Whistle one clear, steady note for about a second. Hold a comfortable pitch instead of changing notes, making a tune or giving a very short chirp.

Open Signal check to see what the microphone hears and whether the app recognises your whistle. Try a few times in a quieter room, then test with the screen locked. Once you have a signal that works nearby, try it from the places where you usually misplace your phone.

No need to force a whistle. If it’s awkward or doesn’t work well for you, switch to a clap pattern. Both options are there so you can choose what feels natural.

If your whistle isn’t picked up

  • Check the mode. Whistle or both must be selected.
  • Check the microphone meter. If it stays still, check microphone permission, the Android microphone switch, and whether another app or a call is using it.
  • Keep the note steady. Try a little longer and move closer before increasing sensitivity.
  • Reduce background sound. Music, fans and a television can make your whistle harder to distinguish.
  • Try the alert on its own. A recognised whistle can still be hard to notice if the sound is off or too quiet.

Higher sensitivity is not always better. If music or other sounds set it off, lower sensitivity and retest. There’s no single setting or distance that suits every phone and room.

If whistle detection works while the app is open but stops after you lock the phone, check background listening. Also check whether you have quiet hours turned on for that time.

Your whistle is checked on your phone

ClapWhistle checks live microphone audio for the sound pattern, then discards it. It does not save recordings or upload microphone audio. Detection works without internet access; the free app’s ads and other online services are separate. Read the privacy policy for details.
